With the current economic condition and global warming issues, many people have been looking for significant ways to conserve energy.

Here is a list of 20 simple ways you can save considerable amount of energy and money:

Lighting:

  1. Make it a habit to switch off the lights when you leave a room.
  2. Use compact fluorescent and micro-fluorescent lights as they conserve energy without sacrificing brightness. You can save up to 75% in lighting costs.
  3. Clean light fixtures frequently because dust/dirt can block up to 50% of the light output.
  4. Use natural lighting by pulling-up your shades and drawing your curtains during the daytime.

Cooling and Heating:

  1. In cold weather, set your thermostat to 68 degrees or less. On the other hand, in warm weather, set the thermostat to 78 degrees or more. Also, be sure to turn it off when you go on vacations.
  2. Set the water heater temperature at a maximum of 120 degrees. This will help save energy and prevent scalding as well. Turn thermostat down to a minimum on the water heater when leaving for a long period of time.
  3. Do not use the fireplaces while your heater is on.
  4. Keep doors and windows closed while using air-conditioning and heaters.
  5. Use ceiling fans that can rotate in both directions. In the summer time, it will help circulate air to make the room cooler and in the wintertime, it will push warm air down to help make the room warmer.

Kitchen and Laundry:

  1. Use smaller kitchen appliances whenever possible. Consider using your microwave or toaster oven rather than using large electric ovens. Smaller appliances will use 75% less energy.
  2. Don’t keep the refrigerator door open longer than needed. Be sure to close it right away to keep the cold air inside.
  3. Wash only full loads in your dishwasher and use the quick wash or short cycles unless the dishes are very dirty.
  4. Air-dry the dishes instead of using the drying cycle. It will take more energy to dry the dishes than washing them.
  5. Run your clothes washer and dryer only when fully loaded.
  6. When running your clothes washer, use cold water when practical, and always rinse cycle in the cold setting.
  7. Do not overload your dryer. Overloading it will not only take more time and not dry clothes properly, but it will also waste a lot of energy.
  8. When using the dryer, separate bulky items like towels, blankets, towels etc. from your regular clothes.

General:

  1. Unplug appliances when not in use. Remember, appliances that are on “standby” will still consume energy because of the light indicator that runs continuously.
