Moving from one place to another can be very stressful. It requires a lot of time for planning and packing. Choosing a good and reputable moving company is very important. It can help in making the moving process easier and less stressful.

Here are important things to consider when finding the right moving company:

1. Do your research.

• Ask your friends and family for any recommendations. Nothing beats positive and negative feedback from a trusted person.
• Are they bonded and insured? Generally, reputable moving companies will have insurance coverage that will replace any loss or damage to your goods and properties. If they do, get the insurance information and call the insurance company to verify the moving company's policy in good standing.
• Check with Better Business Bureau for any complaints filed against the moving company.
• Ask if they belong to any associations, like: State Movers Association, American Moving & Santorage Association, etc.

For interstate moves, be sure to also:

• Validate the company's U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number and registration with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Be sure to ask free estimates from at least three different moving companies. Most moving companies offer free quotes online or over the phone. However, for a more accurate estimate, it would be better to ask a representative to come over to see all the furniture, clothes and other things that need to be moved. In addition, ask for the final bid in writing.

• Binding- This is a guaranteed price, with a slight chance of price increase depending on the type and amount items on the day of the move.

• Non-binding- The amount they give you based on the mover's previous experience similar to your situation. It is important to note that for this type of estimate, the actual price may be significantly different from the estimate.

• Not to exceed- The final price cannot exceed the quote that the mover gave you. As a result, if the actual price is lower than the estimate, you pay the lower one.

3. Get references.

Get at least 3 recent references to interview before making your selection. It will be helpful to know about their experiences, especially the things they didn't like about the moving company, if there is any.


4. Negotiate.

Once you get the quote, it won't do harm if you ask them for any additional discounts. With the current conditions of the economy, a lot of companies are more flexible in giving discounts.


5. Know the methods of payment.

It is advisable to use a credit card versus cash as you will be more protected. Tip: You can always dispute a charge with a credit card company if you feel you were mischarged.


6. Ask, ask, ask.

Talk to the representative of the moving company and ask questions about their policies and agreements.

Here are some important questions to ask:

• Are there any hidden costs?
• What is the claim procedure if you purchase liability insurance?
• Do they offer storage services, in case you need it?

7. Quality over price.

When making your selection, be sure to choose the best mover based on quality. You might be attracted with the lowest estimated price, but you have to remember, it is not the actual price. You might end up paying for more. Consider several factors and do not depend solely on price. Remember, you usually get what you pay for.
