Common breast cancer myths that are believed to be fictitious: Breast Cancer ONLY affects women. It occurs only in elderly ladies. Breast Cancer can be prevented. Breast Cancer is Contagious. Breast Cancer is hereditary A lump in the breast means it's cancer. Antiperspirants and Birth Control pills can cause breast cancer. Underwire bras can cause breast cancer. Herbal medicines and dietary supplements can treat breast cancer. Breast cancer is fatal. Myth #1: Breast Cancer ONLY affects women. Based on recent research and studies, men do get breast cancer as well. However, the risk is much lower compared to women. Myth #2: It occurs only in elderly ladies. No need to worry if you're young. It's true that the risk increases as we age. However, keep in mind that no one is too young to get it. Based on recent trends, there has been an increasing amount of younger women in their thirties who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. To help detect breast cancer, it is advisable for women 40 years and older to schedule a yearly breast examination and regular mammograms. On the other hand, younger women, ages 20-40, should have a monthly breast self-examination. Talk to your doctor about this for more information. Remember, early detection is key. Myth #3: Breast Cancer can be prevented. Unfortunately, this is not the case. According to the American Cancer Society, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer.
