TOPIC: Traveling with Oxygen
Traveling with Oxygen 2 years, 2 months ago #3216

I am thinking about taking my parents on a trip. Not certain where I want to take them only know I want to get them away from home for a little bit. It has been a while and I think it would be fun.
My problem is my mother uses oxygen and she has been fighting this because she is afraid of having to use her oxygen when we travel. My question is is it better to fly and figure out how to get the oxygen on the plane or drive. Driving takes longer and I have to deal with getting enough oxygen for the trip there and back. What do people suggest to make this a fun and painless trip.

I\'m thinking maybe you could ask the company which provides you with oxygen to deliver an additional tank or two at your destination, at the hotel for instance. In case they don\'t have a branch in that area or there are no other means for them to make extra tanks reach you, maybe they can suggest or make an arrangement with another company that offers the same service in the place where you will be staying.

You can research first and find a store that has oxygen. They do have really small tanks - does your mom have a small tank that she can take to travel? Once you get to your destination you can get the bigger ones.

Traveling with oxygen can be intimidating at first but don\'t let it stop your mom from having fun or having an enjoyable vacation. Airlines provide assistance to people who need oxygen. The only thing is you cannot bring your own oxygen supply on board for safety reasons. However, there is an airline supplied oxygen that is available. If you decide to fly, you will have to inform the airline ahead of time that your mom will need an oxygen supply while on board the aircraft. You will also need to get a physician\'s letter stating the need to use oxygen. Hope this helps.

Just make sure that you do your research. When it comes to senior care it is really important to know the do\'s and don\'ts of oxygen to keep everyone safe.
