Our friends next door and converting their large garage into a small apartment for her mother. She can't really live alone any longer but still likes her 'independence', so this way she will still have some privacy. It will really only be one large room with a nice day bed in it but from the looks of the design, I think she will love it. Has anyone else done this for a parent?

This is a really good idea, for people who have extra spaces. I think the neighbors mom will love it. When converting a garage though, you want to make sure it can be heated and cooled properly.

This is a nice way to keep her close, so your neighbors can check in on her. Is the daybed really comfortable and supportive? I have never slept on a daybed before. Susan made a good point too, make sure the air can circulate and heat and cool well.

If I were not able to stay in my own home, having a converted garage apartment would really please me if I had to stay in my children's home. Seniors want their independence, and they do not want to burden their families. This is an excellent alternative.

I think it sounds like a good idea for your neighbors senior mother as well. At least this way she will be close and still feel like she has a bit of privacy.
