Once the signs of dementia are noticeable, how long do seniors typically have before they don't remember family members or their own life? What can be done to slow the progress of dementia?

My aunt was diagnosed with dementia, then Alzheimer's when she was in her late 50s. She lived for over 25 more years, finally ending up in a fetal position in a home for 8 years. She knew close family until probably her mid 60s, but often did foolish things that kept the family on their toes. She couldn't be left alone.

Gee, Edna, that's a lot for a family to go through. I know it is happening all over this country. I wonder how people used to take care of their senior relatives back through history. Most of them would have died earlier, I suppose. It makes you think, doesn't it?

That's really sad, Edna. My senior mother has dementia and it's sad to see her losing her memory. It's cruel the way it steals your life before you actually pass.
