My senior aunt has been a heavy smoker for over 50 years. She has decided she wants to quit her smoking and start improving her health. What screenings should she go through in order to see how much damage has been done or how much she can expect to benefit?

I admire your aunt for finally thinking about quit smoking. My father had been smoking since he was 13 yrs old and stopped at 45. He stopped after getting diagnosed with TB.

I'm not keen with your asking but perhaps other members can do that. Good luck to your aunt.

My father was one of those who decided to quit smoking after smoking two packs a day for thirty years. At age 50, he tossed his last pack into the trash, said, "I'm done," and never picked up another smoke. He had great senior willpower.

It's great that your senior aunt has finally decided to quit smoking. Fifty years of smoking is such a long time. To help her start the process, she might want to consider joining a support group.

TLC makes a good point about seniors joining support groups. The fellowship is an added benefit. I remember watching a co-worker clean out all this black stuff from her cigarette filter that normally would have gone into her lungs. Who knows how much of this gunk has accumulated over long periods of time?
