It may sound trite, but it is true, many people do slip and fall in the tub. What precautions are the best to take to help care for our seniors? Install a hand rail, put in non slip, non skid mats in the tub? Or just retrofit the tub entirely with the walk in type? Has anyone had one of these installed? If so, what is your experience with them?

I think that a walk-in shower becomes the safest option at a certain point. There are fewer balance issues and awkward positions for an aging senior to have to be in.

The home that my gram moved to has only walk-in showers and then shower chairs where the elderly people sit to take a shower. My dad was looking into getting her a whole new tub if she stayed at home (same thing - walk in).

This is really a concern for elders. When my father started to manifest clear signs of aging, the bath tub is one area which I paid attention to. I had grab bars installed and more non-skid mats added...Aside from the tub concerns, water temperature should also be checked to avoid burning from hot water. One of the physical changes in seniors is the decreased ability to sense and respond to temperature.
