Congregate Living

Overview of Congregate Living

Congregate Living is suited for people who need skilled nursing care on a recurring, intermittent, extended, or continuous basis. It is also associated with Nursing Homes, Hospitals, Hospice Center and Hospice Facility.

Congregate Living health facilities are generally less intensive compared to the services provided in general acute care hospitals. However, they are more intensive than the care provided in skilled nursing facilities.

Congregate Living provides inpatient care that includes the following basic services: medical supervision, 24-hour skilled nursing and supportive care, pharmacy, dietary, social, recreational. These health facilities shall provide at least one of the following services: 1) services for persons who are mentally alert, physically disabled persons, who may be ventilator dependent. 2) Services for persons who have a diagnosis of terminal illness. 3) A diagnosis of a life threatening illness, or both; services for persons who are catastrophically and severely disabled.

A Congregate Living health facility is required to have a non-institutional home-like environment with private or semi-private living quarters. These facilities have a central dining area and shared living spaces for social and recreational activities.

Generally, Congregate Living facilities provide organized social activities and non-medical related services such as housekeeping, shopping assistance, transportation services, assistance with activities of daily living and meal services. Special diet accommodations for seniors with special nutritional needs may be available upon request.

Many Congregate Living Facility centers also offer rehabilitative services, support programs and spiritual services offered to their senior residents.
