Our Evaluation of Assisted Living in Los Angeles, CA

(Our Rating = 5 Stars)

Most know that Los Angeles is known mainly for being the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” What most people don’t know is that the city has over 1 million Seniors Citizens and that number will significantly increase within the next 10 years. Luckily, L.A. City has over 170 assisted living facilities to help accommodate this aging population (L.A. County has over 1400 care options). Whether your Love One prefers a small board and care home similar to what they’re used to or a large assisted living community with daily activities, they will have plenty of options to choose from.

Los Angeles is a great place for Seniors to live due to its great weather, history, culture and activities. It’s hard to find any city where you can be in snow-capped mountains in the morning, then find yourself in the warm beaches later in the day. Los Angeles is definitely one of the most desirable places for anyone to live and it is surrounded by some of the best shopping, restaurants, parks, and hospitals.

Local Safety and Crime

With L.A. being a major metropolitan city, you will always find pockets of good areas and bad areas. According to statistics, Los Angeles is safer than 15.3% of the cities in the nation and the crime rate is less than 22% of the cities in California. Before choosing an assisted living facility for your Loved One, ensure to ask other resident families and locals about the area before deciding (source: Area Vibes).

City Weather

Having consistent temperatures year round, L.A. boasts perfect weather year round averaging 74 degrees. The weather ranges from 68 in the winter (48 at night) to 84 degrees in the summer time (64 at night). It’s hard to find better year-round weather anywhere in the world (source: weather.com).

Types of Senior Housing
Assisted Living Facilities are non-medical facilities for seniors who do not require 24-hour medical supervision, but have caregivers on site 24 hours a day. Los Angeles offers over 170 care options with two distinct types of Assisted Living.

The first are large assisted living communities. These facilities offer activities throughout the day and social interaction for your loved one. For residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s memory loss, they also have a secured, lock-down memory wing. Some of these communities include Atria, Brookdale, Sunrise, Belmont and Emeritus Senior Living.

If your loved one prefers a smaller, home-like setting just like home, board and care residential homes might be the answer. These licensed facilities provide care in a small home with six to ten residents. Most of these homes also provide activities, daily meals, assistance bathing, dressing and there are typically 1 caregiver per every 2 or 3 residents.

Local Assisted Living Costs
Depending on the care needs of your loved one, Los Angeles has a wide range of care options and budgets that can suit your family’s needs. The average cost of care for Assisted Living in Los Angeles is $3,500 per month. However, care can start as low as $1,250 per month and go as high as $6,663 per month (source: Genworth 2013).

Cost Factors
The monthly cost of assisted living will depend on your loved one’s required care needs and condition. Other factors will also include location of the facility, age of the building (or if renovated), private or shared room, experience of the staff, length of business, services and amenities.

Paying for Assisted Living
Contrary to popular belief, assisted living unfortunately is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Residents or families pay for the cost of care out of pocket (private pay), through their long term care insurance or through the assistance of the Veteran’s Aid and Attendance program. If your loved one still has difficulty affording care or is not eligible for any of the aforementioned programs, you can contact the Department of Social Services for affordable senior housing programs.

Nearby Hospitals

Should your loved one need routine checkups or emergency care, Los Angeles has plenty of hospitals to accommodate their needs. Out of the 145 hospitals in Los Angeles, 32 of them made the U.S. News & World Report Rankings “Best Regional Hospitals.” Some of them include, UCLA Medical Center, Veteran’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai, Kaiser Permanente, Huntington Memorial and Keck Hospital of USC.

Transportation

Getting around Los Angeles for seniors or those with disabilities might seem a little intimidating at first. However, the city’s “L.A. Metro” Bus line is very accommodating to those requiring extra assistance. If you have questions about fares, bus routes, etc., you can visit the LA Metro website online.

Before deciding on a care facility for your love one, first ask management if they provide transportation and take their residents to their doctor’s appointments, mass service, etc. Typically, most care facilities will be able to accommodate their residents, but some may charge an extra fee for transportation.

Senior Community Centers

Los Angeles has over 30 Senior Centers scattered all throughout the city. If you’re looking at keeping your loved one busy throughout the day, these centers provide lots of activities, social interaction, learning and more. Some of the centers in L.A. include the Ahmanson Senior Citizen Center, the Culver City Senior Center and the Westchester Senior Center to name a few. More information on location, hours of operation and more can be found on the L.A. Parks government website.

Local Shopping & Dining

Los Angeles is a top destination for some of the most famous shopping and restaurants in the entire United States. You and your loved one will definitely have a wide variety of options to choose from.

If you are looking for great shopping and restaurants all in one place, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Beverly Hills (Rodeo Drive and Wilshire), Santa Monica Promenade, The Americana, The Grove, Century City, Universal City Walk and Old Town Pasadena to name a few.

Activities for Seniors

Some of Los Angeles’ great spots for Seniors and families are:

Santa Monica Pier - Enjoy a walk down the beach with your loved one, games and entertainment on the pier or great restaurants and shopping on the Promenade. Santa Monica has a lot of activities and attractions to keep your entire family busy. Plus, the city is surrounded with many close by assisted living facilities, making it a convenient place to visit.

Griffith Observatory - Built in 1933, this historical landmark is located in Los Felis and has views all the way to the Pacific. After a renovation in 2006, you can find exhibits such as the Planetarium, “The Big Picture”, The Cosmic Connection and The Edge of Space Mezzanine

Los Angeles Music Center - If your loved one is into art and music, this is the place to go. The Center is one of the three largest performing arts centers in the United States which includes the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Mark Taper Forum, Ahmanson Theatre and Walt Disney Concert Hall. You can see performances by such notables such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles, Master Chorale and Los Angeles Opera to name a few.

The Getty Center - This is a place your Loved One cannot afford to miss. From architecture, gardens and views of the Pacific Ocean, The Getty Center is a beautiful place that your Loved One will enjoy. The $1.3 Billion Center includes outdoor sculptures in the garden and terrace along with artwork displays including those from Van Gogh and other famous artists.

California Science Center - If you’re near downtown L.A., a local gem to visit is the California Science Center. Not only will you find Air and Space Exhibits, but the Center just received the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2012. They had approximately 2 million visitors in the first year alone, so make sure to make reservations to get your tour of the shuttle.
