History and Population


Laguna Niguel is a city in Orange County, California.  The first recorded inhabitants of Laguna Niguel were Acjachemem Native Americans.  In the 1700 the Spanish missionaries established the nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano. The Mission lands were divided into land grants in 1821. From individual families, hectares of land, mainly for orchards and sheep ranching was transferred to a  corporation, to Laguna Niguel Corporation in 1959 to develop one of California’s first master planned communities.

Laguna Niguel was incorporated on December 1, 1989.  It is predominately a residential city with a population as of 2020 of 64,355. Aside from being known as a bedroom community, the city plan also emphasized on parks and open space, one-third of the city’s total area of 14.9 square miles.
